A haunting sight and sound from the end of Runway 27 at RAF Fairford shortly before dawn, as the crew onboard ‘DARK01’ light their afterburners and make a spectacular launch under the cover of darkness, releasing the brakes at the beginning of a lengthy day-long training sortie whilst on deployment with the 7th Bomb Wing in the UK during ‘Bomber Task Force Europe 22-1’.
The largest swing-wing bomber ever to be in the United States Air Force fleet inventory, the B-1B Lancer is powered by four General Electric F101-GE-102 afterburning turbofans, capable of over 30,700lbf each in full flow – the concerted power of which has helped the Lancer reach over sixty performance world records.
A vastly upgraded aircraft throughout it’s service life, the AN/ALE-50 towed decoy countermeasure system housings are especially prominent on the rear sides of the fuselage – one of countless refinements to improve the interoperability, survivability and mission-readiness of the platform today.
