Under 1944 ICAO requirements member countries were obliged to maintain long-range rescue, search and reconnaissance units within its area of responsibility.
In 1950, the Brazilian government requested assistance from the USAF, to purchase Boeing B-17 specialized aircraft, the USAF agreed with the first five B-17s arriving in Brazil in April 1951.
FAB B17 were also deployed in the Middle East with a unit serving the UN during the Suez crisis from 1957-1960.
Of the 12 B-17s delivered FAB5402 is the sole one to be preserved as a gate guard at Recife Air Base.
